Being the music enthusiast that I am, I LOVE the fact that every episode of Grey’s Anatomy is named after an actual song. I’ve come to realize that the correlation between each chosen song and each episode of Grey’s lies not only in the title but in the message as well. Which makes the show even more brilliant than we originally thought.
This week’s title is named after the song “I Will Follow You Into The Dark” by Death Cab for Cutie. (Visit http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/deathcabforcutie/iwillfollowyouintothedark.html for the full lyrics). Now, of course, everyone’s interpretation of the lyrics will be different, but to me, it’s a song about staying with someone no matter how desperate of a situation they are in, no matter who else might abandon them, and no matter how dark and difficult the place they are headed might be when you go there with them.
These sentiments were present all over this episode. With Derek and Meredith: they have already been through a lot together and it looks like perhaps now Derek is going to be the one to cause some hardships in the relationship. Perhaps the title of this song is in a sense a foreshadowing of what he’s going to put her through. Izze and Alex: Izze’s apparently dying; will Alex be man enough to stick with her till the end? He sure has been stepping up lately, so it seems promising. The significance of this song is even there in the secondary stories of the patients in this episode and in general, with many of the doctors’ relationships with each other. It’s really a beautiful way to relate an artist’s music to the drama and realities of people’s lives. I truly can’t wait to see what next week’s song will be and how it will make sense in the stories of these characters.
