Denny’s dead, Izzie’s quitting and leaving Seattle Grace… oh never mind. Wait, now she’s dying of cancer… emergency neurosurgery saves her. Hey, Alex got her fired and she’s living in a trailer park… whoops, she’s back. Throughout the show, and especially the current season, Izzie seems to find reason after reason to leave the hospital — and then come back after a few episodes of everyone angsting about her absence.
Previous rumors stated that Katherine Heigl was leaning towards her acting career and looking for a chance to leave her surgical role behind, however, Heigl has been cast as a season regular, which should mean her Grey’s career isn’t at its end yet.
So why the constant wave between staying and leaving the hospital? It’s not as if the recent episodes are lacking in drama, the thing is, Izzie just seems to have run out of plot lines. With Alex moved on and her surgical residency terminated, what does she have left to do? In previous seasons, her role was to be the cheery interlude between the darker personalities of Cristina and Meredith. But as of late, Meredith is married and her dark-and-twisty-ness is seemingly behind her.
In the most recent episode, Izzie’s last scene is packing her bags and fleeing the house once again. For good this time? I, for one, hope so because the never ending interjections of Izzie into the real plot lines central to the story are getting truly boring.
Thoughts?

Do you never read the news. Heigl was absent to film a movie and is on maternity leave. This has meant the Grey’s writers have had to come up with a story – unfortunately they didnt have a very good one because it seems so contrived to split Alex and Izzie up. I actually think the return of Izzie is generally the highlight of what has been a pretty poor season. The decline in ratings week after week suggests the public agrees.
Sorry, I didn’t realize she was on maternity leave already, that’s not usually front page material
. But if you read interviews with Heigl, she continually states that she’s looking for a way out of Grey’s Anatomy to avoid the typecast (a little late, in my opinion). And still, I really can’t say poor attempts to dramatize a stale character are the highlights of the show.
Seeing as the writers are taking the high road with the series and moving people out and bringing people in, changing up the character schemes a little, I’m perfectly fine with Izzie leaving. Addison left. Burke disappeared. George died. Not that I don’t like her, but if Izzie left for good, it would leave more room for the new characters from Mercy West to move into the main plot lines. Good riddance. The decline of ratings is just something the show will have to deal with. If you think back on it you can tell the drama of the series was reaching it’s peak. They want this show to outlast the characters. It’ll have some ups and downs in ratings. Right now there’s a decline due to the climax of the last season, but it will steady out.
I think they should use her maternity thing to give another meaning to the story. I know that with the cancer thing she is not suppose to have children, but it could be good to, in a way, make that miracle in Alex life. Maybe this will change entirely her role… just a thought
I mean integrate her maternity thing (real life) with the series, just as I read that they were planning to do with Meredith, because she was pregnant to, or so I read.
I, for one, think that if Katherine Heigl leaves the show it won´t be as exciting… I don´t know why but I think that she´s a fundamental character in the serie and even though Knight and Bruke have gone and yet Grey´s continues i don´t think the popularity of the show will be the same without Izzie. The Mercy-West characters are so booring, that red-headed girl is such a bimbo, blabber and thickheaded… The only one that seems good enough is the one that was hitting on Izzie. They should stick with Alex an Izzie though, they are a really cute couple…
I agree that it’s annoying in the end, this constant wavering. But I hope Izzie comes back for good though.
She can’t leave too..! I mean, with George dead, Meredith all stable and happy, if Izzie leaves too, there will be only Christina and Alex left. and to me she’s always been just as important as mer or christina or any of the 5. I just wish she had better plot lines this season.. I love her, but it seems every episode that she’s back, she’s just a total bitch or a stranger…
So what would be nice would be to bring back the old izzie full time!
Oh Katherine Heigl is pregnant??! That’s exciting news. I didn’t know that and that’s why she’s not on there. I knew it had to be something, but Shelly, I totally agree with you. They SHOULD implement it in the show. It would bring about a freshness, I think. The popularity of the show went down when(Isaiah Washington) Burke got fired from Grey’s. I hated Dr. Hahn and was glad that she left. I wasn’t a big fan of season 4 but they made up for it in season 5.
I’m in agreement with Angee. THe Mercy west characters ARE boring. I think they should go back to where they came from except the cute anesthesiologist. He can stay because he has to date dr bailey.
I hate to say this but I see Grey’s coming to an ending real soon. Probably as soon as next season. I would hate it because I love this show. It has come to be the only show on tv that I look forward to.
Shawanda: Katherine Heigl isn´t pregnant, she has adopted a Korean baby girl!!! So she´s taking a maternity leave so she can take care of her little girl!!!
Im now more interested and excited in Izzie- Alex love story rather than Meredith Derek.
You can even look at Wikipedia Izzie is staying on the show but is off filming a movie. And they all signed on to do at least 8 seasons so there will be 2 more seasons.
i totally agree w/u nicole. I love izzy & alex!!
