On her blog and in interviews, creator Shonda Rhimes speaks about Meredith’s miscarriage as the major death of the Season 6 finale. Um… WHAT?? I understand that this miscarriage is a devastating blow to Meredith’s new positive outlook on life, but how can a terminated pregnancy that we found out about just hours before it was over be the most horrific? How can somebody look past Charles’ poignant speech to Bailey, demanding that she tell Reed about his love for her as she’s lying dead in the supply room? After watching Charles die in Bailey’s lap I wanted to tell my family how much I love them, squash old fights and mend broken friendships. This was clearly the most significant loss on the show. Does anybody feel differently?

i totally agree!! shonda rhimes must have been cracked out when she said that haha meredith can always get pregnant again
I agree with Shonda Rimes. While losing Charles and all the others is a devastating blow to the hospital, this miscarriage is forming an entirely new story line for next season. It will make her realize that she DOES want children NOW, and they will spin off of it for at least the entire season, before she’ll end up pregnant again. I think Shonda was speaking more of how that death will affect the show, rather than just being yet another character they’ve killed off.
but if Meredith can’t have another child ??????????????????????
From someone who’s had multiple miscarriages, that was sadder than Charles dying, I have to say. I never did get into the characters from Mercy West, and didn’t see the point of them being on there. They’ve decided to keep the 2 best ones of the bunch, thankfully.
When I saw her have that miscarriage, my constant crying from the rest of the episode became bawling. It’s so hard to see anyone lose a baby for me, even if they are a fictitious character.
Shonda knows what she’s doing…she’s brought us to craving the next season of a spectacular show–yet again!
I dont think Merediths Miscarriage was all that tragic. i mean come on! everyone elses deaths happened throughout the show. But her Miscarriage only happened in like 30 seconds then it was never talked about again!!
I mean yeah it was tragic. but just the MOST tragic.
There are two different questions here: was the miscarriage the most tragic death, or was it the most important death? Whether or not it was the most tragic is entirely a matter of opinion. But I agree that Shonda’s comment was most likely referring to the importance of the miscarriage in relation to the importance of the other deaths. The miscarriage is what we’re interested in now for the next season… it’s what is going to make people watch the next season. As far as the tragedy of the deaths goes, I personally think that the miscarriage was not one of the most tragic (although, having never had one, I certainly don’t judge those who do) but I don’t think Charles’ death was particularly tragic either… I was surprised that they managed to make me cry over my least favorite character. The death that shocked me the most was Reed’s because it was sudden and final. The whole finale made me cry but looking at it dispassionately, the only character’s they killed off were the ones the majority of viewers were happy to see the end of… it almost seemed like a cop-out to me. But a VERY well done cop-out.
